The Questionnaire: Hal Johnson and Joanne McLeod
We asked the iconic Body Break duo (and Amazing Race Canada contestants) what they think of the city.
Favourite neighbourhood?
H: Bathurst and Finch. That’s where I grew up and it’s where all my memories are.
First memory of the city?
J: I grew up in Scarborough, and when I was little, every Christmas we would go downtown to see the holiday window displays at Simpson’s and Eaton’s.
Describe Toronto using one word:
H: Diverse.
J: Dynamic.
What would you change about Toronto?
H: I’d improve the Gardiner Expressway, or make the core more pedestrian-friendly.
Most under-rated tourist spot in the city?
Both: Toronto Island
Go-to spot?
H: The O Course by the Docks. It’s a beautiful environment, and it’s one heck of a workout.
J: Our first apartment that we had together near Yonge and Eglinton. I go out of my way to drive by it.
What food does Toronto do best?
Both: Greek.
If Toronto had a flag, (besides the CN Tower) what would be on it?
H: Faces from all over the world—there’s no other place I’ve been in North America that’s as diverse.
Favourite event?
Both: Scotiabank marathon
What’s the best way to keep fit and have fun in Toronto?
H: Using one of those Bixi bikes—it makes the city seem friendlier to have them there.
Johnson and McLeod will be competing on The Amazing Race Canada, beginning July 15 at 9 p.m. on CTV.
